Kamille’s Shortcake is my first introduction and first bloomed in 2021. It was trialed at three ADS Trial Gardens (Tacoma, Maryland, New York), and received a qualifying score of over 85 at each garden.

Name Origin/Story: My most beloved doll as a little girl was Strawberry Shortcake, which my Grandma Cox gave to me. I adored all things Strawberry Shortcake and my overly active imagination personified this world as the only girl in the family. Years later, my dad would come home with a flat of strawberries, where I was the resident strawberry huller for Strawberry Shortcake.

Decades later, after Ben and I welcomed three daughters into our family, I liked the idea of ushering the first day of summer with homemade cream biscuits, fresh whipped cream & hulled seasonal strawberries for Strawberry Shortcake for breakfast. This tradition still exists as my daughters are much older. It seemed fitting when showing this dahlia to my dahlia friends and one of them said, “it reminds me of strawberry shortcake.” I knew the name and the beauty of the meaning. It was originally dubbed Kamille’s Strawberry Shortcake. Alas, ADS only permits 22 characters. Welcome Kamille’s Shortcake!

Plant Height: 3 to 3 ½ feet

Identification: BB (4 ½ inches)-Formal Decorative-PK (Pink)

Tuber Production: hearty

Vase Life: 5 days

Cut or Show: Although it did well with trial gardens, I think you would need to shade this one so the colors aren’t as muted for show. This would do well with arrangements and for cut flower.

Color Habit: It can become darker pink in cooler temperatures, or with a bit of shading.

Hybridizer: Kamille Scellick

Years Grown Before Introduction: 2021 (five years)
